EAST OF EDEN

from 165.00

I was commissioned to paint a gift for someone's friend who said, "I don't feel close to God when I am in a synagogue. I feel close to God when I am planting a bunch of pansies in the Earth."

This illumination celebrates the magical and transforming quality of Mother earth. This selection is wonderful for a gardener or a potter, a naturalist anyone who puts their hands in the earth or appreciates Creation.

The page is set up like a page of Talmud, where the center "text" is the image of human hands planting pansies. It is surrounded by "commentary," verses from Genesis 2:7 & 8 telling how the human was formed by God from the earth, and planted in a garden "East of Eden." The commentary below is composed of selected verses from a poem by Donna Henderson, entitled "Brother Francis Speaks." The verses recount how Brother Francis "saw God in that dirt..." during a week of several burials at his monastery. Thus the Earth gives birth to us, and tucks us in when our time to tread upon it is over. When I shared this illumination with a terminally ill woman, her response was: "That is a very comforting thought!"
