"The two of them were naked, the man and his wife, and yet they were not ashamed... Now the snake was more shrewd than all the beasts of the field..."
Bereshit (Genesis) 3:1
This piece illustrates three midrashim (traditional rabbinic interpretations) :
1. That the "fruit" in the Garden of Eden was a fig, because the verse: "they sewed together fig leaves and made themselves loincloths" comes soon after they ate the fruit. Genesis 3:7
2. That the snake had arms and legs before God cursed him "on your belly you shall crawl and dirt you shall eat all the days of your life." Genesis 3:14
3. That the reason the snake tempted Eve, is that he lived in the Garden, and was jealous seeing Adam and Eve making love every day. He wanted Eve for himself. -Rashi
